O is for Orange

My poetry-writing repertoire has been pretty limited--I don't read much poetry, so I don't know how to write it beyond haikus, limericks, and basic rhyming stories without much imagery or depth. So today at the public library I looked for books on how to write poetry. I could only find a few, all in the children's section (I guess adults aren't supposed to need how-to books on poetry?), so I checked out Poetry from A to Z - A Guide for Young Writers, by Paul Janeczko, and the below poem about oranges follows one of the formats suggested for me to try.

Ten Little Oranges

Ten little oranges were feeling pretty fine
One fell off the tree and then there were nine.
Nine little oranges were packed into a crate,
One got smooshed and then there were eight.
Eight little oranges were purchased by Devin
One was juiced, and then there were seven.
Seven little oranges on a table of bricks
One got canned, and then there were six.
Six little oranges were still alive
One became a chutney, and then there were five.
Five little oranges still left from the store
Orange chicken dinner—and then there were four.
Four little oranges were dreaming of their tree
One got stuffed with couscous, and then there were three.
Three little oranges, still without a clue,
Cranberry orange muffins, and then there were two.
Two little oranges, feeling kind of glum
Citrus cinnamon tea, and then there was one.
One little orange—alone is no fun
Rotting in the compost, and then there were none.
